The Parallel Roads
Just west of the hotel is a valley situated that is world famous among
the geography, geomorphology and geology communities in the world.
The name of the valley is Glen Roy and it derives its fame from a
geologic phenomenon that is known as the ‘Parallel Roads’.
Today it is one of the lesser known Natural Nature Reserves in Scotland
because of its relative isolation and poor access, but in the past
it has been a battle ground between conservationists and foresters.
Nevis Gondola
A great recent addition to the area. Britain's ONLY mountain Gondola.
The gondolas carry visitors up to 2150ft on Aonach Mor, beside Ben
Nevis. The journey takes 15 minutes each way, and each gondola seats
up to six people inside. It's great fun and is suitable for all age
groups and most wheelchair users.
At the top station there is a restaurant / bar and a two gift shops.
There are two marked trails to viewpoints from where you can see the
hills of Knoydart, Ardgour and Moidart.
Neptunes Staircase
Neptune's Staircase, north of Fort William, is a remarkable series
of nine locks in the Caledonian Canal. The canal, opened in 1847,
connects Loch Ness to Loch Linnhe and provides a safer inland route
through Scotland from Moray Firth to the Firth of Lorne.
Ben Nevis
Walk it, climb it, take a piano up it, you have to say you’ve
done it! The UK’s highest point, and a spectacular range of
walks and climbs, for the amateur to the seasoned and very experienced
pro.
Ben Nevis Distillery
Distillery tours are freely available throughout the year at an excellent
visitor centre where you can sample and buy the superb and increasingly
popular local golden malt.
Glenfinnan Monument
Enjoy a spooky climb up a spiral staircase to the top and spectacular
views. Visit the superb visitor centre nearby.
Urquhart Castle and visitor centre
A surprisingly shirt journey away and an absolute must visit. Castle
Urquhart (pronounced "urkhurt") stands on a rocky promontary
on the north shore of Loch Ness. As soon as you get here you cant
help thinking, "Well, if I were going to build a castle to survey
this wide glen, and the loch itself, this is where I'd build it!"
In fact people were almost certainly here at least 4000 years ago.
At nearby Corrimony is a burial cairn dating from about 2000 BC. However,
although some evidence has been found of a fort on this promontory
dating from the Iron Age, and also remains from Pictish times, earliest
written records for the existence of a castle date from the 1200's.
The Commando Memorial
This powerful memorial to the Commandos who lost their lives in World
War II has an appropriately magnificent setting at Spean Bridge, 3
miles form the inn, overlooking the Ben Nevis range in Inverness-shire
in one direction and the former training grounds of Locheil on the
other. The monument was designed by Scott Sutherland and was erected
in 1952. |
